What Conditions May be Helped by Therapeutic Massage?
An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins (enhancing medical treatment). Although therapeutic massage does not increase muscle strength, it can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and, thus, partially compensate for the lack of exercise and inactivity resulting from illness or injury. It also can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from exercise or injury.
People with the following conditions have reported that therapeutic massage has lessened or relieved many of their symptoms:
Arthritis
Asthma
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Chronic and acute pain
Circulatory problems
Fibromyalgia
Gastrointestinal disorders (including spastic colon, colic, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome)
Headaches
Immune function disorders
Insomnia
Myofascial pain Premature infants
Reduced range of motion
Sports injuries (including pulled or strained muscles and ligaments)
Stress
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction
There are alternatives out there to what you've been told! Book a massage for your health! Massage is very effective when used as prevention for many of these illnesses, including the common cold!
Contra-indications (illnesses that massage CANNOT be performed on, in most circumstances)
Certain forms of cancer Phlebitis Some cardiac problems Some skin conditions Infectious diseases
*If you have any of these conditions and are wondering if massage is right for you, please speak with your doctor. If clearance is given from a primary care physician in the form of a note, usually we are more than happy to proceed with a massage!*
